The Manufacturing and Industrial Innovation Council (MaiiC) is a Mayoral Industry Partnership that aims to build an ecosystem that supports the growth and sustainability of manufacturing and industrial businesses in New York City. MaiiC brings together the diverse elements of the industrial ecosystem to address the industry’s rapidly changing labor force needs and the business environment of NYC. MaiiC’s work has four main aims:

Organize: Build an active, organized constituency for industrial and manufacturing businesses to unify their voice and elevate practices of high road employers

Workforce & Talent: Partnering to co-develop solutions to ensure there are reliable talent pipelines and upskilling resources for industrial businesses

Policy & Regulation: Advising city government on pain-points in industrial business operations and stability

Industry 4.0: Facilitating transition to Industry 4.0 technology and workplace culture to change the perception and functionality of Industrial and Manufacturing

MaiiC is led by an Executive Board of key representatives of businesses across the industrial and manufacturing sectors, which will guide MaiiC’s work on talent pipeline and upskilling resources, policy and regulatory reform, and technology innovation and adoption. MaiiC is also comprised of three Advisory Committees for (i) Production, (ii) Transportation, Logistics, and Distribution, and (iii) Infrastructure and Utilities, which are public ‘meetup’ style gatherings of companies and interest groups with the aim of aligning on challenges confronting each subsector, sharing ideas, building consensus, and providing guidance to the Executive Board.

INITIAL MaiiC INFORMED EFFORTS INCLUDE:

  • ApprenticeNYC, a full-time on-the-job training initiative informed by industry to address skill shortages in the manufacturing, transportation and infrastructure industries.
  • Reports and studies on the industry and its importance to NYC
  • Campaigns to promote the value of the Industrial and Manufacturing sectors to NYC

ApprenticeNYC for CNC is an apprenticeship program, where apprentices will be following an accelerated training model where individuals with minimal to no experience in CNC machine operations will be selected by employers through a rigorous series of assessments, including aptitude assessments and interviews, prior to embarking on their 18- month apprenticeship. The NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) manages the assessment process and will cover a portion of the apprentice’s wages during the 18-month program period.

The CNC apprenticeship program has 5 components, which include employment, technical-hands on instruction, on the job training, and wage increases and ultimately a new job title. This program is a fit for your company if you:

  • Have trouble finding qualified CNC Machine Operators
  • Are ready to hire now and commitment to train and mentor your apprentice over 18 months
  • Are willing to increase your apprentice’s wages over the 18-month period based on their increasing expertise and skill development

This is a program created to address the challenges of finding qualified talent for skilled occupations. By participating employers are committed to the following components of the program:

  • Hire an apprentice
  • Review the technical-hands on curriculum
  • Participate in training your apprentice while they are in the job
  • Increase the apprentice’s pay as they gain more experience
  • Create a new job title upon completion of the 18-month program
