Ticket blitz starts Sunday! CDL drivers beware; speed, size/weight, texting, seatbelt, disobey signs of special interest. As reported by Commercial Carrier Journal, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) will significantly increase traffic enforcement starting Sunday October 16th for its annual Operation Safe Driver Week. Law enforcement agencies throughout the country will crack down on trucks, buses, and cars in an effort to reduce the number accidents, injuries, and fatalities.
CVSA says that the Operation Safe Driver Program was created to help reduce the number of crashes, injuries, and deaths due to unsafe driver behaviors. They say that during their 2015 Operation Safe Driver week more than 21,000 vehicles including trucks and cars were pulled over and more than 19,000 roadside inspections were performed on commercial vehicles. These are impressive numbers, but they are just numbers. If it’s all about safety, we wonder if ticketing alone encourages safer driving. While we certainly support safety measures we question the effectiveness of an enforcement onslaught.
