On August 13, 2015 the New York City Council introduced a bill that would require the Department of Transportation to create a program providing car sharing companies with dedicated parking spaces for their cars. This will include both metered and free spaces. Car sharing companies include Car2go and Zipcar. The purpose of the bill is to promote the use of car sharing programs and discourage private car ownership. The theory here is that this will cut pollution and congestion. However if the city is reducing the already limited number of available parking, commercial vehicles making pickups and deliveries will have even less room to operate.
