When the New York DOT proposed a new Long Island truck route on Nassau County’s South Oyster Bay Road, residents of Syosset, Hicksville, Plainview, and Bethpage, joined together to try to block it. The route, requested by Fed Ex to ease access to their new hub at the old Grumman site in Bethpage, goes through their neighborhoods from the LIE bypassing the already congested 106/107 corridor. Town of Oyster Bay officials claim that they missed the DOT’s letter allowing them to weigh in on the issue. So, the Oyster Bay Board voted to ban big rigs on that route. The legality of a town ban on such truck traffic remains to be seen. The town board is working with the DOT to make the ban permanent. There is concern that if the ban sticks trucks will detour to roads that are severely congested already. DOT in consultation with the Federal Highway Administration will have final say on the matter.
