After weekend protests over the killing of George Floyd led to violence, Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered a curfew for New York City Monday night from 11PM-5AM. The police department sent 8,000 officers into the streets, doubling its presence in areas where there was violent property damage. This (as many predicted) did not help the situation as looting continued throughout the night. As such, New York City will have a nightly curfew beginning at 8PM through June 7th. This curfew does NOT apply to workers in essential industries, such as freight movement.
Some suggestions to keep your drivers safe during these times are:
- Plan for road closures
- Plan for an increased police presence
- Contact the delivery location to get the most current and timely situations and conditions
- Plan to park in a safe location outside the area and secure the truck (more on this below)
- Do NOT leave a truck parked on the street (residential areas, highway shoulders, industrial zones)
- Drivers should keep their company posted and updated as they travel
- Carrier’s should know where their drivers are at all times
- Communication is key. What the driver is observing may be different than what a dispatcher is seeing on a computer screen
- Drivers and carriers should utilize all technology available to them
