New York City will create nine new bus lane projects in all five boroughs to speed up travel times and reliability. Five of these projects look to replicate the 14th Street Transit/Truck Priority pilot, which is being made permanent. The remaining projects will be dedicated bus lanes.
Busways (bus and truck):
- Main Street in Queens
- Sanford to Northern Boulevard
- Jamaica Avenue in Queens
- Sutphin Boulevard to 168th Street
- 5th Avenue in Manhattan
- 57th Street to 34th Street
- Jay Street in Brooklyn
- Fulton Street to Tillary Street
- 181st Street in Manhattan
- Amsterdam Avenue to Broadway
Bus Lane:
- 14th Street in Manhattan
- (1st Avenue to Avenue C)
- 149th Street in the Bronx
- Southern Boulevard to River Avenue
- Merrick Boulevard in Queens
- Hillside Avenue to Springfield Boulevard
- Hylan Boulevard in Staten Island
- Lincoln Avenue to Nelson Avenue
The Main Street busway as well as the 149th Street bus lane project will begin in June. In total, these projects will account for 3.5 miles of transit/truck space and 16.5 miles of dedicated bus space. The City and MTA believe that 744,000 riders will be served by this, but such numbers should be taken with a grain of salt considering the uncertainty surrounding what post-COVID-19 New York City will look like. Mayor Bill de Blasio’s press release did not mention enforcement, but the 14th Street transit/truck corridor used cameras along the route, so expect cameras to be added along with the nine new projects.
