Car accidents are common worldwide and in the US, with most of the damage affecting the property. However, it causes more than 38,000 deaths, and safe driving is always encouraged to lower the statistics. If unfortunately, you get involved in a car accident, there are some crucial steps to take to protect yourself and your interests. Whether or not it is your fault, below are some of the things you should not do to avoid putting yourself in more trouble.

  • Don’t leave the scene

In some instances, you could be charged with a felony or misdemeanor if you leave the scene of the accident. When you hear of homicide, you may immediately think of the Daniel Fung arrest. However, escaping an accident scene may aggravate a terrible situation as you may be charged with vehicular homicide. Even if it is ruled that you were not at fault for the accident, you might still be convicted of a hit and run since you fled. And it makes no difference who committed the accident. Even if you don’t think any major harm was done, it is prudent to stop and assess the situation. You will also have to call the police since you need a police report to file a claim with an insurance company. This will depend on the extent of any possible damage caused. In some states, you can call the police if the damage is more than $500. Ideally, you should wait until law enforcement gives the go-ahead to leave the scene.

  • Don’t admit to anything just yet

It is normal to feel remorse if you feel you may have caused the accident. However, you are likely to be overwhelmed with emotion after the experience and may exaggerate your role. Therefore, experts advise that you don’t admit to anything without all the facts. Anything you say could be used against you, so the less, the better. You can wait for a lawyer at fasigbrooks.com/tallahassee/auto-accidents/, who will guide you on the right things to say before making an official statement. . This will ensure that you are not given an undue penalty. You should also consider collecting evidence such as photos and videos from the scene to be able to give a better account of the incident. You can also rely on witnesses, who are unbiased third parties, to give an account of the incident.

  • Don’t forget to inform your insurance company

Insurance companies are there to help you get back on your feet after an unfortunate event. Therefore, after a car accident, you are better off informing them about it, arming yourself with useful information such as names, addresses, driver’s license numbers, photos, etc. And if the accident was caused by a DUI and there was some car damage, you should consider getting car insurance after DUI from a reliable company.

  • Don’t underestimate your need for medical attention

After an accident, you may feel a rush of emotions which could prevent you from noticing any possible injuries instantly. You may not think much of it to check yourself to a hospital. However, even if there is no visible evidence, you might be bleeding internally from the impact. A trip to the hospital will allow you to get a proper assessment and prevent more dangerous problems. Always remember to also remove yourself from any danger, such as fires, to a safe place.
