If there is one annoyance for all car owners, it’s potholes. Driving down the road and bouncing your car into potholes is not ideal – it actually can make your car tires explode. That’s not ideal! Potholes are the result of too much moisture in the soil under the surface of the road. The moisture then freezes and the ground above it sinks and breaks apart – which is really not a friend to your car at all!

You have to be careful when you are driving on the road, but if you see potholes in the road you need to know how to handle it. You can get the right care for paint protection film to help you to keep your car from being chipped by pebbles and stones on dirt roads but what do you do about potholes that can severely damage your car? You need to know how to handle this so that you can keep your car as protected as possible. Proceed with caution when it comes to potholes and use the four tips below to save your car from expensive and irreversible damage while you drive.

  1. Always keep an eye on the road. As you drive, you’ll be watching the roads regardless of the time of day. You need to look out for potholes while you are driving and you should ensure that you maintain a proper driving distance on your way, too. Sometimes, drivers will give you the heads up to tell you there’s a pothole ahead by flashing their lights. If that’s the case, make sure that you give the drivers behind you the same courtesy. Potholes can happen overnight, so you have to maintain your awareness.
  2. Never swerve away. The worst thing that you can do with a pothole is swerve away from one. You will put yourself and others on the road in danger when you do that and you could end up in a bigger situation than before. You need to mitigate the damage to your car, not make it potentially worse. Choose to slow down as much as possible and get some immediate help from a mechanic as soon as possible.
  3. Make sure that your tires are in good condition. A good way to ensure that your tires are in good condition is with a full inspection by a mechanic. Ensure that you have your tires properly inflated and you will avoid any bumps in the road.
  4. Report a potholes you do see. Where possible, you should report all potholes on the road to make sure that you protect others on the road. Pothole damage may be covered by your insurance provider, but you should always ensure that you have help from a good mechanic who can look after your car for you. You need to budget for this, too, just in case your insurer cannot cover it for you!

Potholes are the bane of a driver’s life. Don’t let it affect you by ensuring that you act right on the road from the moment you start driving. Awareness saves lives.
