The process of moving into a new property is always exciting, but it can also be quite daunting. There are many things to think about, from packing your belongings and arranging transport to finding a new dentist and school for your children. Unfortunately, it’s easy to forget some less obvious things, such as changing your address on official documents and updating your insurance policy. This blog post will discuss four often overlooked aspects to consider when moving into a new property.

Changing your address on official documents

One of the first things you should do when you move into a new property is to change your address on all of your official documents. This includes your driver’s license, passport, bank account, credit cards, and other forms of identification. Failure to update your address could result in problems later down the line, such as being unable to vote or being fined for not having the correct documentation. Additionally, it is crucial to update your address with the relevant authorities, such as the DMV, IRS, and Social Security Administration.

Updating your insurance policy

Another critical thing to remember when you move house is to update your insurance policy. Your home insurance policy will need to be updated to reflect the new address, and you may need to take out contents insurance if you don’t already have it. It’s also worth checking that your car insurance policy covers you for driving to and from your new home. If you’re moving to a different state, you may need to purchase a new policy altogether.

Consider drug testing the property:

This is especially important if you are moving into a rental unit or multi family home. Although your landlord or property manager may have screened the previous tenants, you never know what kinds of activities went on in the unit before you moved in. Having the property drug tested can give you peace of mind and ensure your new home is safe for you and your family, so find reputable drug testing for properties before you move in. Also, don’t hesitate to hire a professional cleaning company to clean the space thoroughly before you move in.

Check for pests:

Pests can be a big problem in any home, but they are especially troublesome in new properties. This is because new construction homes are often built on land that has not been cleared of pests. Pest infestations can cause serious damage to your home and pose a health risk to you and your family. Therefore, it is essential to have your new home inspected for pests before you move in. You can also take preventive measures to deter pests, such as keeping your yard clean and tidy and sealing any cracks or openings in your home.

Moving into a new property is always exciting, but it’s important to remember the less obvious things, such as changing your address and updating your insurance policy. Additionally, you should consider drug testing the property and checking for pests before you move in. Taking these precautions ensures that your new home is safe and comfortable for you and your family.
