Pedestrian accidents are one of the most devastating types of automobile accidents. The force and weight of a motor vehicle can cause serious injury and even death to a pedestrian. Although motorists are not always at fault, they are responsible for taking certain steps following a pedestrian accident.

Stop and Remain at the Scene

The first and most important thing for a motorist to do after a pedestrian accident is to stop and remain at the scene. Leaving the scene of an accident can result in criminal penalties. Even if the motorist believes that he or she is not at fault, it is necessary to stay until the police arrive.

Call for Help

The next step for a motorist is to call for help. Whether it’s calling 911 or another emergency service, getting medical assistance for the pedestrian as soon as possible is important. A driver should also get in touch with his or her insurance company and tell them what happened.

Gather Information

A motorist should also do their best to gather as much information as possible about the accident. This includes taking pictures of the scene, getting any witnesses’ names and contact information, and writing down his or her own account of the incident.

Contact a Lawyer

A motorist must contact a pedestrian accident attorney immediately after a pedestrian accident. A lawyer with a lot of experience in pedestrian accidents can help drivers through the legal process and protect their rights. The lawyer can go over the details of the accident, look at the legal options, and give advice and help to make sure a good outcome. Also, the lawyer can stand up for the driver in court and try to get a settlement that pays for medical bills, lost wages, and other costs.

Take Care of Yourself

Finally, a motorist should take care of themselves after a pedestrian accident. This includes getting enough rest, eating healthy, and talking to a counselor or therapist if necessary. It is also important to keep track of all medical bills and expenses related to the accident.

Navigating the aftermath of a pedestrian accident can be difficult and overwhelming. However, by following these steps, a motorist can ensure that he or she is taking the necessary steps to protect themselves and their rights.
