New York City has moved quickly to install side guards on all city owned trucks and require installation on private garbage trucks (Side Guards). In the five months since Mayor Bill de Blasio signed the side guard requirement it is easy to spot something a little different about trucks.
Branding the guards with “vision zero” was a nice touch.
Do not be surprised if there is a push to create a federal regulation for these. Side guards have been required standard equipment going back to the 1980 in Europe and Japan. Recently, Brazil passed a law requiring them and Canada is looking into it. As for here in the United States, Portland, Washington D.C., Boston, and Cambridge have all passed regulations similar to New York’s.
