In 2019 the New York City Council passed a law requiring the Department of Transportation (DOT) to come out with and implement a transportation masterplan every five years beginning in 2021. DOT aims to have the plan completed in December and is beginning the New York City Streets Plan currently.

The masterplan looks to build on current DOT initiatives such as the Better Bus Action Plan and the Smart Truck Management Plan, which seeks to enhance the economic vitality and quality of life for all New Yorkers by providing for the safe, equitable, efficient, and responsible movement of goods.
